Antwan is an interesting eighth grader with some untapped potential who makes friends easily in school. He enjoys sports and music in school more than most of the academics but this past year he has started to enjoy learning. He likes different kinds of science, where he is learning about waves, ocean waves and mechanical and electrical waves. He admires Barack Obama, too, and likes to read about him.
Antwan is sometimes a deep thinker, and finds that the helping and entertaining professions are ones that interest him. He could see himself someday in the music business, show business, sports, or even police work as a career. He has not always worked hard on making his dreams come true, but he has started to change lately. At his foster home he enjoys going to church activities with the family, going to Boys and Girls Club activities, and going out to eat or to the store. If an adoptive home had some pets, he says, “They are very special. They mean a lot.” His foster family has had dogs and gerbils—the dog sadly disappeared, and it had been his favorite.
When Antwan was younger he dreamed about being on stage like Michael Jackson, dancing the moonwalk, and singing. He still admires the late Michael and all his talent, and loves to play the electric guitar and the bass guitar. For a while he played trombone in the school band as well. If Antwan can catch up in school with grades and his studies, he might qualify to go to college some day. He gets some tutoring help already in math, and uses school for learning as well as for socializing with both girls and guys. Antwan likes to play or watch football, soccer, and basketball. He has a wiry but athletic build that serves him especially well on the soccer field, where he is very fast on his feet and he handles the ball very well.
Antwan is in a happy foster home where he now feels comfortable. He has a foster mom, and a foster brother a couple of years younger and a little toddler sister who he looks out for. If Antwan found the right adoptive family, he would need the combination of wise, strong, happy, safe, but flexible parenting. In the foster home where he is now, there is almost no fighting. Hardly any angry words. Antwan likes it that way. He wants to be helpful to a family with chores, but also to join in the fun times.
Antwan has siblings who he would like to keep in touch with, even after he is adopted. He dreams of an adoptive family who is part of a larger community or neighborhood, and takes part in their activities, fun, and projects. He’d like to feel comfortable and safe with friends in his neighborhood, church, and community. How would Antwan, and his hopes and dreams, fit into your family plans?
