Kayla is a relaxed, easy-to-talk-to high school sophomore with plans to become a cosmetologist when she grows up. Her favorite subject in school is science. She is in a special program for all her classes except health and gym and enjoys most of them, but math is a challenge for her. Kayla is certainly good at conversation, a trait that usually works well in a beauty shop career.
She says, "I'm pretty good at making friends." She lives in a group home with about ten girls who are mostly a little older. She says that she gets along with the staff there too. This past winter there have been plenty of chances to go sledding and snow tubing that are fun for Kayla and her friends. The tubes have handles to hold onto, a good thing on a big hill. On cold afternoons after school sometimes they take a snowy walk. They often arrange a trip to the library, see a movie, or run some errands to do "allowance shopping" with staff members they usually have fun.
When Kayla has an inside day with her friends they sometimes work on manicures and hair styling. She likes a natural look. Kayla likes to watch a little TV with them, episodes of CSI or many of the shows on the Lifetime network are usually popular with almost everyone. It helps, Kayla says, when girls can agree to watch the same thing at once. She is pleased that the staff members who take care of her are always trustworthy, loyal, and polite people to count on, good traits for living again in a family someday.
She would also love it if a family had a pet, adding "I'd love it--to have a kitten or puppy in the family." Some of her friends volunteer at an animal shelter, helping feed and take care of the cats and dogs. Kayla says she would like to try volunteering her time for a cause like that. She also likes being helpful in the kitchen, and if she were adopted, she'd like to help bake. Her favorite dessert recipe is a double chocolate chip cake. She also loves to fix a nice big salad with a little spaghetti to go along with it.
Kayla likes going to a Christian church on Sunday and a youth group on Wednesday evenings. She was on a basketball team for two years, and enjoyed it. She likes volleyball and softball, too. She is a natural in sports, fast on her feet and quick when a ball is in play.
Kayla has experienced her share of ups and downs over the years.
